Yoseph is lifted out of the pit, shaved, and given a whole new set of garments. In the Bible, shaving often marks a transition between two phases of life or states of being. The doubling in Pharaoh’s dream points to one reality confirmed by God, giving us further insight into the pattern of doubling in the Yoseph story as a whole. Yoseph is presented as a new Noah, with Pharaoh’s house as the ark where others will find shelter and provision.
