Israel existed in the same cultural environment as its ancient neighbors. So the biblical authors speak from within their ancient Near Eastern perceptions of the world. They are making worldview claims about the God of Israel through their cultural constructs. Because of this, it can be helpful to compare Israel’s cosmology with its neighbors to see what stands out. Authors are borrowing concepts from their originality to explain the God of Israel and the entire creation with elements including waters and land
