MODULE 4: A Tour of the Cosmos

SESSION 17: The Dragon in the Waters

The tannin, or mythical sea dragon, is created on the fifth day along with other sea creatures. In Scripture it symbolizes disorder, chaos, and death, yet the creation account presents it as nothing more than one of Yahweh’s creatures under His command. The waters and the sea dragon illustrate forces that seem to threaten human life, but they are not independent powers. Instead, they are created realities fully subject to God’s authority. This perspective reassures readers that even the most terrifying symbols of chaos remain within God’s control and will ultimately be subdued. The creation story therefore proclaims that God alone rules over all, turning potential disorder into an ordered world destined for His lasting peace.

      • Amen! God rules over all and is in absolute control. There is no power that can stand in his way or bring irreparable damage to his creation. This is why human fear is one of the surest indications of either a limitation in the knowledge of God, or a failure to acknowledge God’s sovereignty over all.
