Exodus overview-sessions 7-9
One outstanding thing that i got from the sessions above is about the significance of Moses’staff turning into a snake infront of pharaoh. I found out that this was an act of Yahweh proving His sovereignty. In the Egyptian culture and royalty, snake symbolises a power associated with chaos, danger and rebellion against God. Egyptians worshipped snakes allover. Pharaoh wore a crown that had the symbol of uraeus(cobra) who was their goddess of protection.
Their magicians were known for their snake tricks. When Moses appreared before pharaoh and his staff became a snake, the magicians used their normal snake tricks for their sticks to become snakes also. Then the snake formed from Moses’ swallowed the magician snakes. What do we learn from this? Yahweh was not playing tricks as the magicians did. God was challenging the Egyptians and proved to them that He is the sovereign who rules over everything in this world. He rules over all creatures including the Egyptiansand their gods and even pharaoh himself. Secondly we learn that Moses was only acting on behalf of Yahweh for when commanded by him to throw the stick down it turns to be a snake. When commanded by God to pick it by the tail it turns to be a stick. This was not a trick but a sign that Yahweh controls the cosmos.
