• TRIED AND FAILED

      Chapter 10

This topic discusses figures in the bible whereby it distinguish between those who succeeded despite their flaws and those whose lives ended in failure.

Some succeeded through Faith: People such as Abraham (who lied about Sarah not being his wife for fear of being killed yet he is known as the father of faith)about Moses (who struck the rock in anger yet he was the greatest prophet), David (who committed adultery and murder yet it is written he was a man after God’s own heart),Jonah (who fled God from being sent by God but brought the greatest revival), and Peter (who denied Jesus but led the early church )are highlighted. despite their significant moral failings, they are remembered as heroes of faith because they possessed the capacity to return to God.

There are those that went through ultimate failure: Examples Samson, Uzziah, and King Saul. They allowed sin—ranging from entanglement with heathen influences like Samson to prideful disobedience in Saul.Their ends often resulted in failure, tragic deaths or rejection by God.In comparing

true repentance between Saul and David,we learn a lesson illustrating the difference between worldly sorrow and genuine repentance.

Saul’s Reaction: Saul represents superficial sorrow. When confronted with sin, he did not genuinely change; instead, he shifted blame to others and was primarily concerned with his public image and reputation rather than his relationship with God.

David’s Reaction: David represents sincere repentance. When confronted by the prophet Nathan regarding his sin with Bathsheba, David immediately humbled himself. He accepted full personal responsibility without making excuses and sought forgiveness, a posture immortalized in Psalm 51.
