I am glad to know that Jesus was raised by the Old Testament and his disciples were exposed to the same Bible. Jesus was so knowledgeable in this Hebrew Bible that, a number of times he responded to questions thrown at him by the phrase “have you not read?” or “it is written”. Each time he made such statements, he did refer his audience to the same Hebrew book. On the lighter side, I share with some of the students, how I often skip portions of the old testament because they are not interesting to read and also, the cultural differences between the Jewish context of the Bible and my African culture. I am not able to relate often times with Jewish culture.

On the strategies to reading the Old Testament, I have always adopted the Hero model. I am able to keep stories about a number of these heroes in memory; example Moses, Joseph, Daniel etc.
