Lesson 1: chapter 21
The Typological method
This is a method for studying the Bible, focusing on “types” which are defined as shadow figures or patterns in the Old Testament that foreshadow future realities, particularly concerning Jesus Christ.
Definition of Types:
Types are persons, things, or events in the Old Testament that prefigure or represent a future person, thing, or event, often relating to Jesus Christ and His work. They are likened to prophecies, with some already fulfilled and others yet to be fulfilled.
Examples of Types:
Adam is presented as a type of Christ, as he represents someone who was to come (Jesus).
Old Testament sacrifices are types of Christ’s sacrifice in the New Testament.
The serpent lifted up in the wilderness, which brought healing to those bitten by snakes, is a type of Jesus’ death, which brings salvation
Types are classified as
1) Persons 2)places 3)events 4) material things
Joseph as an Example:
Joseph’s life is given as a specific example of how the patterns of his life closely mirrored those of Jesus.
