• INTRODUCTION TO THE HEBREW BIBLE

MODULE 4: SESSION 21: Characterization and Biblical Setting

In biblical narrative characters are critical elements in interpretation of biblical events. In biblical narrative the narrator often allows the reader to evaluate the character’s decisions by narrative the consequences of the character’s decisions. For instance, in the biblical narrative of Adam and Eve we know that there was no polygamy. By observing characters like Abraham, Jacob, David and Solomon we automatically see the consequences of their actions.

Therefore right from Genesis 1 a reader should build an internal encyclopedia allowing him/her to have an hyperlink of activities and events across the bible whereby for instance when we meet cities or places like Jerusalem we begin to associate with characters like David, Ruth, Jesus etc.

Finally we also need to understand that a tool for understanding biblical narrative includes plotting, characterization and setting.
