MODULE 4: SESSION 22: Design of Genesis 3:14-19

Genesis 3:14-19 forms a pivotal poetic unit within the creation story, following the pattern of narrative sections that culminate in concise, densely packed poems. In these verses, God pronounces a curse not on the human beings but on the snake and the ground. The snake is condemned to crawl and to face perpetual conflict with the seed of the woman. The ground, likewise, is cursed, ensuring that human labor will be marked by struggle and pain. Yet humanity itself is not cursed; instead, men and women will experience toil and hardship as part of life outside Eden. This prophetic poem sets the stage for a larger biblical theme: the ongoing enmity between the seed of the woman and the seed of the serpent. Ultimately, the promise of victory over the serpent points to God’s plan for redemption, reminding readers that the true enemy is never another human but evil itself.
