How Do I Begin Studying the Bible?

Many Christians want to know God more deeply but aren’t sure where to begin. The Bible is a remarkable collection of sixty-six books written over thousands of years, yet it tells one unified story of God’s plan to redeem His creation through Jesus Christ. While opening the Bible for the first time can feel overwhelming, developing a consistent Bible Study habit doesn’t have to be complicated.

The best place to begin is with the Gospel of John. John’s Gospel was written so that people might believe that Jesus is the Messiah and have life in His name (John 20:31). As you read, don’t worry about understanding every detail. Instead, ask simple questions: What does this passage teach me about God? What does it reveal about Jesus? How should this change the way I live today?

Consistency is far more important than speed. Reading one chapter each day and taking a few minutes to reflect on what you’ve read will often produce greater spiritual growth than trying to read large portions without taking time to understand them. Before you begin, ask the Holy Spirit to give you wisdom and understanding. God delights in revealing Himself to those who sincerely seek Him.

One helpful approach is to keep a simple notebook nearby. Write down verses that stand out to you, questions you may have, and practical ways you can apply what you’ve learned. As your Bible Study becomes a regular part of your life, you’ll begin to notice how God’s Word shapes your thinking, strengthens your faith, and encourages you through every season of life.

It’s also important to remember that the Bible was never intended to be read only as a collection of isolated stories or inspirational verses. Every book contributes to one great story—the story of God’s Kingdom. From creation in Genesis to the new creation in Revelation, Scripture consistently points us toward Jesus Christ. Keeping this larger picture in mind helps individual passages make much more sense.

Don’t be discouraged if you encounter difficult passages. Every believer, no matter how mature, continues learning throughout life. Some portions of Scripture require careful study, while others speak clearly on the first reading. When you come across something you don’t understand, make a note of it and continue reading. Often, as you become more familiar with the Bible as a whole, earlier questions begin to answer themselves.

Finally, remember that the goal of Bible Study is not simply gaining more knowledge. The goal is knowing God more personally and allowing His Word to transform your life. James reminds us not to be hearers of the Word only, but doers who put God’s truth into practice. As you faithfully spend time in Scripture, God will continue to shape your heart, strengthen your faith, and prepare you to serve Him more effectively.
