Chapter 13: Teaching Illiterate Students
Proverbs 9:10
“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.”
An illiterate person is someone who cannot read or write in his or her language.
Illiterate people can be taught God’s Word effectively. Literacy is not a requirement for understanding the gospel. God’s truth can be communicated through speech, demonstration, storytelling, and practical examples.
Deuteronomy 6:6–7 – God commanded His people to teach His Word diligently to their children in everyday life.
Jesus often taught without written materials. He used parables, everyday experiences, and conversations that people could easily understand.
Use simple and clear language.
Relate the message to the learners’ culture and daily life.
Use the environment and familiar objects as teaching aids.
Tell Bible stories instead of relying on reading.
Encourage memorization of important Bible verses.

Teaching illiterate students requires patience, creativity, and love. By following Jesus’ example and using oral teaching methods, every person can understand and grow in the knowledge of God’s Word, regardless of their ability to read or write.
